Sandwiches are convenient for a quick lunch, at home or on the go. At nine months, your baby may enjoy a piece of bread or toast with a thick puree spread on it; at 12 months, he may find a single layer sandwich with soft ingredients manageable; and by 18 months, he can probably handle a two-layer sandwich with different fillings.

The ingredients can be prepared ahead of time, and sandwiches can be assembled with efficiency. See suggested combinations for sandwich ingredients, then mix and match for variety and according to your toddler’s personal favorites.

For best taste, sandwiches should be served at room temperature, rather than chilled. Most vegetable sandwiches can stay fresh for several hours, even without refrigeration. Or you can put sandwiches in an insulated lunch bag and include a small freezer pack.

Choose bread made from whole grains, with simple, natural ingredients, and use gluten-free bread before your child is 12 months old and for those with a gluten intolerance. Fresh bread is most delicious, but you can also freeze bread to have it on hand when needed. Pita bread is a convenient option for children, because the pocket holds the fillings without as much mess.

Tempeh Sandwich

  • 18 months +

You will need
  • 1 teaspoon tamari
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, made without canola oil or eggs
  • 1 tablespoon mustard, stone-ground without preservatives or additives
  • 2 slices bread
  • Carrot slices, lightly steamed
  • 2 tablespoons clover sprouts for 18 months+
Method
    1. Cut tempeh into 2 pieces and slice down the middle.
    2. Place the pieces in a small dish.
    3. Mix tamari and water, pour the mixture over the tempeh, and marinate for 30 minutes.
    4. Heat a skillet with the oil, place the tempeh slices in the skillet, and brown on one side for 5 minutes, then brown on the other side for 5 minutes.
    5. Transfer to a plate, and let cool before making sandwiches. If you prepare tempeh ahead of time, it can be stored for 2 or 3 days in the refrigerator.
    6. Spread mayonnaise and mustard on bread, and add carrot slices and sprouts.
    7. Press sandwich lightly so that the ingredients stick together.
    8. Cut sandwich in half.

hummus sandwich

Hummus Sandwich

  • 12 months +
  • 1 sandwich
  • vegetarian

Hummus is an easy protein spread that is tasty for all ages. If you buy prepared hummus, check for salt content. For younger babies, it is easy to make your own with home-cooked or canned beans or chickpeas. Other beans make delicious spreads for variety.

You will need
  • 2 tablespoons hummus or other bean spread
  • 2 slices bread
  • Lettuce leaves
  • 3 black olives, sliced
Method
  1. Spread hummus on bread.
  2. Add lettuce and olive slices.
  3. Press sandwich lightly so that the ingredients stick together.
  4. Cut sandwich in half.
Variations
  • Substitute other bean spreads.
  • Add cucumbers, tomatoes, or avocados. 

salmon sandwich

Salmon Sandwich

Canned salmon is an easy way to make a sandwich full of omega-3 fatty acids. When buying canned salmon, check the label for wild salmon instead of farm raised.

You will need
  • 1 (6-ounce) can wild salmon, drained
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon fresh parsley or dill, minced
  • ½ teaspoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise, made without canola oil or eggs
  • 2 slices bread
  • Cucumber slices
Method
  1. Mix together salmon, lemon juice, herbs, and olive oil. Salmon salad can be prepared a day ahead, and kept in the refrigerator.
  2. Spread mayonnaise on bread, add salmon mixture on one side, and top with cucumbers.
  3. Press sandwich lightly so that the ingredients stick together.
